"Voller Sonnen"
Konzert für Mandoline und 13 Instrumentalisten.
(2004)

-normales Fingerpizzicato
-Pizzicato mit dem Daumen
-Pizzicato mit dem Fingernagel
-Pizzicato mit dem Daumennagel
-Pizzicato mit Plektron
-wirbelndes Pizzicato mit mehreren Fingern abwechselnd.

Hinzu kommen Instrumente, welche eine "Lautverschiebung" gewisser Mandolinentöne, bzw.
gezupfter Töne von Violinen, Violen, Celli und Kontrabass ermöglichen:
-Cembalo (mit und ohne Lautenzug)
-verschiedene Percussionsinstrumente (afrikanische Schilftrommel, usw.)

Replete with Suns
Concerto for Mandolin and 13 Instrumentalists
(2004)

The mandolin is one of those instruments which the folklore scene largely claims as its own, and even today, the very idea of employing it for compositional purposes above and beyond folkloric usage means an explosive potential: there are not too many virtuosi of this instrument either willing or able to come to grips with rhythmic proportions not governed by classical patterns.

And my concerto is really first and foremost a "rhythmic composition", almost in the sense meant by N. A. Huber. (Cf. my text from May 2002, in particular the last paragraph.)

Taking as a starting point the notion that the solo instrument is a typical plucked string instrument, the whole ensemble is treated primarily as an oversized "plucking machine".
Even a cursory glance at the diverse treatment of string pizzicato reveals this immediately:
- ordinary finger pizzicato
- thumb pizzicato
- fingernail pizzicato
- thumbnail pizzicato
- plectrum pizzicato
- pizzicato with several fingers in rapid alternation

The piece also employs instruments which allow a "sound shift" of certain mandolin tones or plucked tones of violins, violas, cellos and double bass:
- harpsichord (with and without the lute stop)
- various percussion instruments (African reed drum etc.)
- flute (especially the "tongue-ram" effect).
The series of "sound shifts" of (short) pizzicato notes leads however again and again to another extreme - the long sustained note. In this respect it is particularly the accordion which combines with the further tonal possibilities of the (bowed) string instruments and the flute.

"Voller Sonnen"
Concerto pour mandoline et 13 instrumentalistes.
(2004)
